We're all excited for this Sunday, November 11, 2007, the Brown University Competition!
This is traditionally a favorite of dancers and spectators. The event does not take place on the Brown campus, but at the dance hall Moseley's On The Charles.
Schedule
- 5:30 am: Meet at the Circle outside the Campus Recreation Center
- 6:00 am: Depart Campus
- 7:00 am: Doors Open
- 7:45 am: American Rhythm
- 10:40 am: Fun Dance
- 11:30 am: International Standard
- 1:30 pm: Newcomer Team Match
- 2:10 pm: American Smooth
- 4:40 pm: Fun Dance
- 5:40 pm: International Latin
- 8:00 pm: Good night!
Competitors in the caravan must meet at the circle at 5:30 am. Most dancers will be done for the day at the conclusion of the American Smooth events, and may opt to stay for the second fun dance. We will probably have most people return to campus after the second fun dance, getting back to campus by 7:30 pm. TJ and Gillian are competing in Internation Latin, so anyone who wants to stay and watch them compete is welcome to.

Events
Newcomer, Bronze, and Silver competitors will all dance Cha Cha, Rumba, and Swing in Rhyhm and Waltz, Tango, and Foxtrot in Smooth. Silver-level International Latin consists of Cha Cha, Rumba, and Jive. For bronze level and above, Cha Cha and Rumba are a combined event, as are Waltz and Foxtrot.
Fun Dances
Two fun dances will be run (time permitting) between events during the day. In a fun dance anyone may compete, and it will probably be something unusual. Don't know the dance? Good chance nobody else does. Get out there and fake it, you win fun dances by having fun, not by being right.
Newcomer Team Match
The team match consists of teams of four couples, where each couple on the team does one dance. The dances are American Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, and Swing. The collective scores of the four couples decide who the winning teams are. This event is for newcomers only, and all newcomers are strongly encouraged to participate.
Competitors
- Newcomer

Competitors in Newcomer and Bronze must show up in the morning dressed for Rhythm. That means guys, have your pants and shirts on and ready. Girls have your base layers like tights and foundation garments, maybe even the whole dress with some pants tossed on under it. Having makeup and hair pre-done is also a good idea. You want to have as little left to do as possible when you arrive at the competition, because time will be tight.
Spectators
For the best viewing experience, you want to arrive and be settled for the beginning of the American Rhythm and/or American Smooth event blocks, which start at 7:45 am and 2:10 pm respectively. Be aware that from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm UML does not have anybody competing, although there will be events going on. This is a good opportunity to go out and get some lunch. We really love having people come cheer us on, and you are more than wolcome to come photograph and video tape the events. In the past there has been a small spectator fee, but this year there is no mention of it on the web site. Hope to see you there!
